The Oswego Juniors program offers young soccer players a high level of individual and team soccer skills that will enable players to go as far as they wish within the sport. These skills are taught by qualified coaches in an environment suited for the mastery of these skills. Equally important, the Oswego Juniors Program teaches the players involved valuable life lessons such as hard work and respect.
Our Juniors program, for players in the U9 and U8 age groups (born in 2016 or 2017), is a program we are extremely proud of and a place we believe also helps prepare players for the next step into our strong Classics program. Juniors is a place for young players to fall in love and find a passion for soccer. Our first priority is always to create a safe and fun environment to help young players develop.
Our methodology is tailored after some of the best soccer programs throughout the world. While we strive for excellence within all our programs, winning will never surpass the need for development. Winning will simply be a by-product of our development. All of our coaches believe in this philosophy and strive to put development before winning. Our coaches teach technical skills that will allow players to keep possession of the ball. We believe this is this basis for creating well rounded soccer players long term.
Environment is also very important in the development of good soccer players. We encourage players to take chances and be creative without the fear of losing. Programs that put a large emphasis on winning typically are not able to develop creative players because most of the players are watching the bigger, stronger, faster players do all the work. Our goal is to develop technically competent players that can play at the next level, whether that is High School soccer, college soccer or beyond. We provide an environment for this to occur.
We do not have a try-out day, however we follow a process for our U8 and U9 teams, we do offer players a “training period” where they will get evaluated by our staff. We evaluate the player’s ability, how they interact with others and how well they receive information from our coaches. If we feel a player is not at the level to play in the program, we will give an evaluation and explain what areas need development.
One of the key factors in the growth of any developmental program is the parents. Lake Oswego SC parents will need to “buy in” to our philosophy as well. While many parents look at the standings as the strength of the club, parents need to look much further. Younger teams that do well typically do so because of the athletic ability of a few players. These teams tend to play a very direct style of soccer. While the short-term goal of winning may be accomplished, development is not occurring at the rate it should be. Education of the parents and players is paramount for the development of all players. If you look at our older teams and players, many have won State Championships, gone on to play college soccer, and represented their country on youth and full National teams.

THE OSWEGO JUNIORS PROGRAM IS GEARED TOWARDS PLAYERS WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED A COMMITMENT TO PUSH THEMSELVES AND A DESIRE FOR MORE LEARNING. PLAYERS MUST BE WILLING TO WORK HARD.
AREAS OF EMPHASIS
UNDERSTANDING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WORKING HARD AND PUSHING ONESELF TO BE THE BEST ONE CAN BE AND THE DEVELOPMENT WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE AS A RESULT
ENJOYING SOCCER MORE AND MORE BY WORKING HARD IN TRAINING AND IN GAMES
INDIVIDUAL BALL MASTERY –
THE MORE A PLAYER CAN DO WITH THE BALL THE MORE THEY WILL ENJOY THE GAME – EACH SESSION WILL INVOLVE PLAYERS WORKING WITH A BALL AND DEVELOPING ALL ASPECTS OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL TECHNICAL ABILITY – DRIBBLING, RUNNING WITH A BALL, SHIELDING, PASSING, CONTROL, ETC
SMALL GROUP TACTICS –
WE WORK WITH PLAYERS AND PUT THEM IN 2V1, 2V2, 3V2, AND 3V3 SITUATIONS SO THEY BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND THAT WORKING WITH TEAM MATES AND AGAINST OPPONENTS IS A PART OF THE GAME
DECISION MAKING –
THROUGH THE GAMES AND EXERCISES WE EMPLOY WE WILL REQUIRE PLAYERS TO GET THEIR HEADS UP SO THEY SCAN THE FIELD AND START TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS. THIS IS A CRUCIAL PART OF THE PLAYER DEVELOPMENT EQUATION AS WE STRIVE TO DEVELOP SKILLFUL PLAYERS ABLE TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS WHEN UNDER PRESSURE.
The program is for players who have developed a love for the game and want to become better soccer players, creating a competitive but not exclusive environment for these developing youngsters.
The program is for players that were born in 2016, 2017.
As players move to the “competitive & Classic" pathways, teams are organized by birth year, not grade.
Annual membership $1050
Includes coaching, equipment, field rentals, and league fees.
Uniforms are not included in program cost.
Scholarships are available for families based on need.
This program is for players who want more than our 'youth soccer' programs.
The commitment is higher in terms of time, season length, cost, and travel in comparison to our recreational/ youth programs.
The most important part of choosing if this is the right fit is to ask the question: does your player love soccer? All players who participate will make significant improvements through the course of the program. Players are assessed on ability in their first few sessions. Those who our coaches feel are not the right fit will be advised to take part in our youth soccer programs as an alternative.
